The New Quotable Golfer: The Best Things Ever Said by the Pros and Duffers of the Sport
A comprehensive collection of the best things ever said about the game of golf.
“Golf,” observed Mark Twain, “is a good walk spoiled.” Of course, golfers know it’s more than that. It’s “a game in which you try to put a small ball in a small hole with implements singularly unsuited to the purpose” (Winston Churchill). The wit and trenchancy of that esteemed twosome gets some pretty good competition in the pages of The Quotable Golfer by hackers and pros alike: P.G. Wodehouse, Bobby Jones, Lee

why do people think the technology the golfers have today makes an impact on who’s the best golfer ever?
Question by Smitty: why do people think the technology the golfers have today makes an impact on who’s the best golfer ever?
i realize that maybe this would make sense to a stupid person, but it makes no sense at all. Because EVERYONE now has access to the same technology, and EVERYONE when jack played had access to the same technology. no one is looking at scoring average, were looking at wins. and the fact of the matter is that tiger is on pace to absolutely murder jacks records. if tiger keeps this pace, he will have 130 wins by the time he’s 45. In my mind, he is without a doubt the best golfer ever, or at least for sure going to be
first answerer- you are completely over looking what i said. everyone in jacks era had access to the best technology, and everyone now has access to the best technology. no factors have changed there, and tiger is gonna get more wins. simple as that
3rd answerer. agreed, but he’s on pace for 130 wins by the time he’s 45. that almost forces me to overlook that

If you are talking about the “best ever,” how can you ignore technology? You are talking about people who play essentially the same classic courses that were played on 90 years ago or more. In those days they used guttapercha balls and wooden-shafted clubs.
However, I agree that technology is not a factor when comparing players of the same era – but you weren’t.

If Tiger Woods retired today, would he be considered the best golfer ever?
Question by guitarman: If Tiger Woods retired today, would he be considered the best golfer ever?
I know he’ll be back from his bad injuries though. I was just wondering if you think Tiger could be considered the greatest golfer if he retired today. (In my opinion, I would say yes. All his victories aside, anyone who can win the U.S. Open while playing at around 50% has to be considered the best ever. Without a doubt. Golfers have won a lot of tournaments before, but they have never absolutely crushed the competition like Tiger has done.)

he would be considered in the conversation, but I still have to think Nicklaus gets the title
