To me – breaking 80 is a milestone as it suggests a level of skill, while making a hole-in-one is more about luck.

I’ve seen lots of holes-in-one made over the years, and the majority not as a result of a crisply- and accurately-struck shot. And instead bounced off ponds, trees, and greenside rakes.

And after seeing an 8-year-old boy make a ace on a 170yd par-3 hole that never got more than 6-inches off the ground, during the first round he ever played, I became more convinced it’s more about being lucky than good…especially when the kid all but started crying and said, “that shot wasn’t good, it sucked.”
