Howard Gene Hatfield, 81, of McAllen, Texas, formerly of Evansville, passed away Thursday, December 3, 2009, at Texas State Veterans Home.

He was a veteran, retiring from the U.S. Navy. In 1946, Howard began his military career by traveling to the South Pole with the Admiral Byrd Expedition. He ended his military career after serving two tours in Vietnam. He was an avid golfer.

Howard was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Edna (Hare) Hatfield; and brother, Marion “Sonny” Hatfield.

He is survived by his sons, Stan Hatfield and wife, Margaret, Howard Hatfield and companion, Donna, and Mark Hatfield and wife, Diane; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; sisters, Dorothy Barfield of Florence, South Carolina, Delores Helm, Mary Hahn, both of Evansville, and Sandra Ward of Ft. Branch; and brother, Gary Hatfield of Evansville.

Friends are invited to a gathering in memory of Howard Hatfield on Sunday, December 6, 2009, from 2 to 6 p.m. at Alexander West Chapel.
