The myth of the want to be long drive guy?
Question by disorderedmojake: The myth of the want to be long drive guy?
I have read some of what the golfers out there are talking about when it comes to their club head speed and distance.
Wake up and find a club maker that has the proper equipment to give you the correct information.I bet 75% will not break 95 mph which will at most give you a 250-60 yard drive
For a good to average golfer there is no average drive of three hundred yards in your bag.A good golfer has a handicap of 10 or less in my book. A great golfer is scratch, a Pro golfer has a chance to break par every time they walk on any course.
There was one guy that said his club head speed was 145 mph. That is truly remarkable. That would give you the the worlds records. If I were you I would be calling Krank golf and entering their long drive contest. With that club head speed you should be able to hit the ball over 500+ yards. Think about it, I am sure you are the same guy that the big one always got away.

The people who compete in national long drive competitions do indeed have some pretty crazy clubhead speeds. Most of them are in excess of 130 mph, I think the world champ almost hits 160 mph…
Drives in the competitiion range from 380- almost 500 yards, it really is quite amazing.
The difference is this group of people is more rare than professional golfers. These people spend all their time working solely on building muscle, flexibility, and clubhead speed. They use oversized drivers that most of the time aren’t legal for tournament play, and XXStiff shafts. They routinely crack drivers in practice. Its like the muscleheads of the golf world.
You are right though, the average golfers clubhead speed is <90mph giving drives of about 240 yds or so. Most people who talk about clubhead speed have never actually had their clubhead speed measured so are just guessing...
...usually based off of their best drive ever downwind, downhill, on a hardpan fairway.

Who has benefited more form vast improvements in equipment?
Question by Mike: Who has benefited more form vast improvements in equipment?
I would put golfers into 3 categories:
1. Pros
2. Good golfers 0-18 handicaps
3. Everyone else
IMO equipment has improved the game for everyone, but mainly for the 0-18 handicaps.
Equipment has made the game easier to play. The balls go further, clubs are more forgiving.
Equipment has made the game more accessible i.e. the equipment is not as expensive as it was 30 years ago.
Good swings are helped more by equipment than bad swings or perfect swings.
I should say that equipment has made it possible for more people to enter the good golfer, 0-18 handicap level and thereby make golf more fun.

Does anyone think equipment is too good?

I think that the equipment is definitely responsible for golfers getting better but keep in mind that the courses on the PGA Tour have been “Tiger Proofed” in a sense – (1) longer courses, some are over 7400 yards (2) much much narrower fairways (3) longer rough (4) strategic sands traps (5) guarded pins with super slick greens, over 12 on the stimp (6) much much better players – - – if equipment makes the golfers of today so much better, than why hasn’t someone shot a 18 under yet? if golf was as difficult as it used to be, than it would be very difficult to have a amateur following – even more than equipment, you can point to Tiger Woods as the one who gave the amateur the hopes of making golf be as easy as it looked when Tiger did it – I would say that equipment actually appeals more to the high high handicappers – I am a 10-12 handicap and I play with 10 year old Titleist Blades – if I switch to brand new, would I all of a sudden be a 5? Probably not – I would say if your handicap is 18 or over, that is where equipment actually makes that player able to actually play golf – Tiger is so good, he could play golf with a broom stick and still stuff it – great question, though
